Vacations aren’t Optional

Greg and I are looking forward to our annual beach vacation in May. Yes I notice my privilege as I write these words. I’m incredibly fortunate to be able to take nice vacations with my husband. I realize how lucky I am, and am extremely grateful for this opportunity.

I firmly believe there are real benefits to getting away from it all when possible. Our annual vacations have made our relationship stronger and kept our personal and professional lives in balance.

Getting away from your hometown and exploring another location doesn’t have to be expensive. As my Dad says, “if you live in San Antonio take a short drive to Austin. If you live in Austin, go to San Antonio. If you live in Poteet, you can go anywhere and have a terrific time.”

Here are the benefits I’ve discovered from taking vacations:

  • I’m more relaxed in mind, body, and spirit
  • Clarity of thought
  • Remembering what’s truly important in life
  • Seeing the beauty of nature with fresh eyes
  • Broadening my worldview by meeting interesting people from other cultures and hearing their stories
  • Fresh inspiration: new thoughts and ideas flow naturally to a rested mind
  • Stronger, more resilient relationships
  • Enjoyment, frivolity and fun!

When I’m on vacation, discipline vanishes and I allow myself the freedom to enjoy a simpler life for a while. Reading good books, napping, seeing new sights, eating great food, and listening to fun music is all I need. The to-do list and goals can wait until I get back to reality.

If you’re in need of a vacation, start planning your next getaway now. Save up some money, block off the time, and do whatever it takes to make it happen! You’ll be glad you did.
